Azerbaijan joins the Convention Against Trafficking in Human Organs
On October 30, a
meeting was held between the Chief of the State Security Service of the
Republic of Azerbaijan, Colonel-General Ali Naghiyev, and the Secretary General
of the organization, Mrs. Maria Peychinovich Burich, at the headquarters of the
Council of Europe in Strasbourg, and the Azerbaijani side signed the Convention
against Trafficking in Human Organs of the Council of Europe. Mrs. Secretary
General assessed the accession of Azerbaijan to this convention as a very
important event, touching on the bilateral relations that have been formed for
many years, and expressed her confidence that the cooperation will continue
successfully in the future.
Colonel-General Ali Naghiyev
informed about the current security situation in the region and emphasized that
our country is always interested in the establishment of lasting peace in the
region, spoke in detail about the comprehensive guarantees provided by the
Azerbaijani government for the peaceful residence of citizens of Armenian
origin in the Karabakh territory, the
work done by our state to protect their rights and freedoms, the efforts made
by Azerbaijan for the sake of ensuring well-being, fundamental and reliable
stability in the region, the importance of the normalization of relations with
Armenia and the signing of a peace treaty soon.
Secretary General Maria
Pejchinovich Burich noted that the Council of Europe always attaches importance
to maintaining peace in the South Caucasus and that the organization can
provide necessary support to this process.
Speaking about the
ethnic cleansing and mine terrorism carried out by Armenia against Azerbaijani
citizens, the Chief of the Service Ali Naghiyev highlighted his opinion about
the position of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe that people
living in the countries covered by the organization have the right to fully
enjoy all the rights and freedoms stipulated in the European Convention on
Human Rights and expressed his hopes that the provisions of the international
legal document shall be applied in the issue of protection of the rights of the
citizens of Azerbaijan who lived as refugees and internally displaced people
for a long time, went missing, were taken hostage, and lost their health due to
mines planted by Armenia.
At the meeting, a broad
exchange of views was also held on other issues of mutual interest.
